Intact Forest Landscapes Until now, it has been difficult to keep tabs on the world's ancient forests. We know that we have been destroying forests at an uprecedented rate, but it's been difficult to determine which forests are most affected and to what extent. Thanks to up-to-date, high resolution satellite imagery, we have created a new map of our ancient forests - what's left of them - and can now begin to focus on securing protection for the ones most in need.

Congo Rainforest Covering 358 million acres, the forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) provide livelihoods for 40 million people and play an important role in both biodiversity protection and global climate stability. International Policy Solutions The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement between governments. The focus of CITES is to ensure that trade in plants and animals does not threaten the survival of the species. Each year the trade in wildlife is estimated to be worth billions of dollars. This provides a strong incentive for high volume trade and threatens the very existence of many of the world’s commercially valuable timber species. CITES is a voluntary international agreement that states agree to implement through their own domestic legislation when they become parties to the convention. There are approximately 30,000 species of plants and animals under some sort of protection from CITES. Currently there are less than 40 timber species listed, yet many additional species are threatened around the world.

Domestic Policy Solutions In the US, we are working to permanently protect and restore ancient forests on public lands. A first step is for our government to end commercial logging that is destroying our heritage forests. We recommend an immediate moratorium on all commercial logging and road building in federal forests. Over the long term, our government must adopt policies that protect and restore our forests.

Call for a Moratorium Greenpeace calls for an immediate national moratorium on large-scale commercial logging and road construction on federal forests that are under the administration of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The moratorium should remain in effect until the mismanagement of these forests has been thoroughly investigated by the government and an open and transparent multi-stakeholder processes determines the exact size and location for new federally controlled protected areas.

Kleenex Free Classrooms: Protecting the Boreal... The North American Boreal forest is one of the largest intact ancient forests. In addition to being an important area for First Nations and indigenous communities, the Boreal forest is also home to caribou, lynx, songbirds and wolves. As one of the largest storehouses of carbon on the planet, it is essential in the fight against global warming.
